Abstract
The present invention relates to compositions, including pharmaceutical compositions that inhibit complement activation, and contain amino acid sequences X1-X2-X3-W-E-X4-X5-X6 and/or Z1-C1-Z2-P-Z3-Z4-C2-Z5 as described. The invention further relates to methods of inhibiting complement activation in vivo or ex vivo by administering a pharmaceutical composition as described herein.

A composition for inhibition of complement activation, said composition comprising a polypeptide comprising a sequence X1-X2-X3-W-E-X4-X5-X6, wherein:
- E is a glutamic acid residue;
- W is a tryptophan residue;
- X1 is a hydrogen atom, a sequence of one to five amino acid residues, or a bond covalently linking the polypeptide to another component of the composition;
- X2 is an amino acid residue;
- X3 is a basic amino acid residue;
- X4 is an aromatic amino acid residue;
- X5 is an amino acid residue;
- and
- X6 is a hydrogen atom, a sequence of one to five amino acid residues, or a bond covalently linking the polypeptide to another component of the composition.

A composition for inhibition of complement activation, said composition comprising a polypeptide comprising a sequence Z1-C1-Z2-P-Z3-Z4-C2-Z5, wherein:
- C1 and C2 are cysteine residues;
- P is a proline residue;
- Z1 is a hydrogen atom, an amino acid residue, or a bond covalently linking the polypeptide to another component of the composition;
- Z2 is at least one amino acid residue;
- Z3 is a hydrophobic amino acid residue;
- Z4 is at least one amino acid residue;
- and
- Z5 is a hydrogen atom, an amino acid residue, or a bond covalently linking the polypeptide to another component of the composition.
A composition for inhibition of complement activation, said composition comprising a polypeptide comprising a sequence of SEQ ID NO 6.
