Abstract
Coating adhesion on wooden articles, such as railroad crossties, is improved through use of three surface-treating techniques prior to application of the coating. The first technique involves forming grooves on the surface of the wooden article, the second technique involves exposing the wooden article to heat to reduce the moisture content of the surface of the wooden article, and the third technique involves creating incisions on the surface of the wooden article to further promote adhesion. The techniques may be advantageously used together to further enhance coating adhesion.
Claims36
A method for making a coated wooden article having improved coating adhesion comprising
- (a) providing an elongated wooden member having a surface area;
- (b) treating at least a portion of said surface area of said wooden member to enhance adhesion of a subsequently-applied resinous coating;
- and
- (c) coating at least a portion of said surface area of said wooden member with a resinous coating to produce a coated wooden article resistant to separation of said wooden member and said resinous coating.
A method for making a coated railroad crosstie having improved coating adhesion comprising
- (a) providing an elongated wooden member having a surface area;
- (b) treating at least a portion of said surface area of said wooden member to enhance adhesion of a subsequently-applied resinous coating;
- and
- (c) coating at least a portion of said surface area of said wooden member with a resinous coating to produce a coated railroad crosstie resistant to separation of said wooden member and said resinous coating.
A coated railroad crosstie having improved coating adhesion comprising an elongated wooden member having at least one groove on said surface of said wooden member, said wooden member surface being coated with a resinous material.
A coated railroad crosstie having improved coating adhesion comprising an elongated wooden member having a surface area of containing less moisture than normally occurring in said wooden member and said surface area being coated with a resinous material.
