Abstract
Novel wash and carrier solutions ideally suited for topical administration (e.g., as wash solutions and as carrier solutions). The solutions described herein arc non-toxic, non-irritating, isotonic, possess non-specific broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, and have an alkaline pH. Also disclosed are sterile preparations of the solutions and methods of using the same.
Claims25
An aqueous antimicrobial and preservative alkaline solution, comprising:
- (a) buffer system for maintaining the solution at an alkaline pH;
- (b) surfactant system;
- (c) metal ion chelating agent;
- and
- (d) a non-ionic preservative having antimicrobial activity,
- wherein the aqueous antimicrobial and preservative alkaline solution is non-irritating.

The aqueous antimicrobial and preservative alkaline solution of 1, wherein the metal ion chelating agent is tetrasodium EDTA at a concentration of about 0.126% (w/w).
