Thiomolybdate analogues and uses thereof

A compound of structural formula (I):

• R1, R2, R3, R5, R6 and R7 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, arylalkyl, substituted arylalkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, cycloheteroalkyl, substituted cycloheteroalkyl, heteroaryl, substituted heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, substituted heteroarylalkyl, heteroalkyl or substituted heteroalkyl;
• R4 and R8 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, arylalkyl, substituted arylalkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, cycloheteroalkyl, substituted cycloheteroalkyl, heteroaryl, substituted heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, substituted heteroarylalkyl, heteroalkyl or substituted heteroalkyl or are absent when N is part of an aromatic ring;
• optionally, R1 and R2 taken together are alkyldiyl, substituted alkyldiyl, heteroalkyldiyl or substituted heteroalkyldiyl;
• optionally, R5 and R6 taken together are alkyldiyl, substituted alkyldiyl, heteroalkyldiyl or substituted heteroalkyldiyl;
• optionally, R1 and R2 taken together, R2 and R3 taken together and R2 and R4 taken together are alkyldiyl, substituted alkyldiyl, heteroalkyldiyl or substituted heteroalkyldiyl;
• optionally, R5 and R6 taken together, R6 and R7 taken together and R6 and R8 taken together are alkyldiyl, substituted alkyldiyl, heteroalkyldiyl or substituted heteroalkyldiyl;
• optionally, R3 and R7 taken together are alkyldiyl, substituted alkyldiyl, heteroalkyldiyl or substituted heteroalkyldiyl;
• and
• Y−2 is (MoS4)−2, (Mo2S12)−2, (Mo2S9)−2, (Mo2S7)−2, (Mo2S8)−2, (Mo2S11)−2, (Mo2S6)−2 or (Mo2S13)−2;
• with the proviso that if Y is (MoS4)−2 and R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 are identical then each of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 is not hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or n-propyl.
