Abstract
Abstract of the Disclosure A cutlery implement includes a blade, a tang and a handle. An insignia or making is located on an end surface of the handle facing away from the blade, the insignia indicating the type of blade attached to the handle. The blade and tang are part of a single piece of forged metal. The tang extends substantially the entire length of the handle and includes a surface visible from the top of the handle.
Claims35
A cutlery implement comprising a working element attached to a handle, and an external marking for indicating the type of implement, wherein the marking is located on an end of the handle facing away from the working element so that when the working element is sheathed the marking is displayed.
The implement of claim 1, wherein the working element comprises a knife blade.
The implement of claim 2, further comprising a tang extending from the blade along substantially the entire length of the handle, wherein the blade and the tang are one-piece of forged metal.
The implement of claim 3, further comprising an end cap connected to an end of the tang.
The implement of claim 4, wherein the marking is located on the end cap.
The implement of claim 3, wherein the tang includes an externally visible surface.
The implement of claim 6, wherein the externally visible surface of the tang extends along a top surface of the handle.
A cutlery implement comprising:
- a blade;
- a tang;
- a handle;
- an insignia located on an end surface of the handle facing away from the blade, the insignia indicating the type of blade;
- wherein the blade and the tang are a single piece of forged metal;
- and
- wherein the tang extends substantially the entire length of the handle and includes a surface visible from a top of the handle.
The implement of claim 8, wherein the insignia is located on an end cap connected to the tang.
The implement of claim 8, wherein a top line extending along the top of the handle includes a single peak.
The implement of claim 10, wherein a bottom line extending along a bottom of the handle is curved and includes a single valley.
The implement of claim 11, wherein the end surface of the handle is substantially planar and is angled so that a line connecting the top line and the bottom line is angled so that a point where the bottom line intersects with the end surface is closer to the implement than a point where top line intersects with the end surface.
A handle for cutlery, comprising an insignia indicating the type of cutlery, wherein the handle includes an end cap located at an end of the handle opposite a working element and wherein the insignia is located on an end surface of the end cap facing generally away from the working element attached to the handle.
The handle of claim 13, wherein the handle includes a tang fully forged with the working element, the tang extending substantially the entire length of the handle and being connected to the end cap.
The handle of claim 14, wherein the tang is welded to the end cap.
The handle of claim 14, wherein the tang includes a visible top surface extending along substantially the entire length of the handle.
A cutlery set comprising:
- one or more cutlery implements, each having a handle;
- a block including an opening for receiving the implements so that when one of the implements is positioned in the opening, the handle extends out of the block;
- wherein at least one of said implements is sheathed in the block, a marking is visible, said marking identifying the type of implement.
The set of claim 17, wherein the marking is located on a butt end of the handle facing generally away from the block when the implement is sheathed in the block.
The set of claim 17, wherein the implement includes a tang fully forged with a knife blade and extending into the handle substantially the entire length of the handle.
The set of claim 19, wherein the tang is connected to an end cap having the marking.
A cutlery implement comprising:
- a working portion;
- a tang extending from the working portion;
- a bolster positioned between the tang and the working portion;
- and
- a handle attached to the tang;
- wherein the working portion, bolster and tang are parts of a single piece of forged metal;
- wherein the tang includes a top surface facing in a direction generally opposite to a working surface of the working portion, the top surface being visibly exposed along a top of the handle;
- and
- wherein the width of the handle adjacent the bolster is not greater than 3/5 the width of the handle at a midpoint along the length of the handle thereby providing a comfortable fit for a hand.
The cutlery implement of claim 21, wherein the handle is configured so that a top line extending along the top of the handle includes a single peak and a bottom line extending along a bottom of the handle is curved and includes a single valley and an end surface of the handle is substantially planar and is angled so that a line connecting the top line and the bottom line is angled so that a point where the bottom line intersects with the end surface is closer to the blade than a point where top line intersects with the end surface.
The cutlery implement of claim 21, wherein the height of the handle adjacent the bolster is approximately 4/7 the height of the handle at a midpoint along the length of the handle.
The cutlery implement of claim 21, wherein the handle includes an externally visible exposed surface containing a marking identifying the implement.
The cutlery implement of claim 24, further comprising an end cap connected to an end of the tang and positioned at an opposite end of the handle from the working portion, the exposed surface located on the end cap.
A knife comprising a blade, a tang and a bolster forged from a single piece of metal and including a handle attached to the tang, wherein the tang includes a top surface visibly exposed along a top of the handle;
- and wherein the width of the handle adjacent the bolster is not greater than 3/5 the width of the handle at a midpoint along the length of the handle thereby providing a comfortable fit when a hand properly grasps the knife so that the thumb and the forefinger extend over the bolster and blade on opposite sides of the knife and the three remaining fingers curl around the handle.
A method of identifying cutlery comprising:
- providing a plurality of pieces of cutlery, each piece of cutlery having an implement and a handle;
- and
- placing an identifying marking on the handle of each piece of cutlery.
The method of claim 27, further comprising:
- storing each piece of cutlery in a block of material so that the marking is exposed, thereby allowing each piece of cutlery to be identified by the marking.
The method of claim 27, wherein the step of placing an identifying marking on the handle includes placing the marking on an end surface of the handle.
The method of claim 27, wherein the step of placing an identifying marking on the handle includes placing the marking on a substantially planar end surface of the handle facing generally away from the block.
The implement of claim 1, wherein the marking is fixedly attached to the end of the handle.
The implement of claim 8, wherein the insignia is fixedly attached to the end of an handle.
The handle of claim 13, wherein the end cap is fixedly attached to the end of the handle opposite the working element.
The set of claim 17, wherein the marking is fixedly attached to an end of the handle.
The method of claim 27, wherein the identifying marking is fixedly attached to the handle.
