A method of doing business is disclosed which utilizes a set of databases and tables to efficiently produce competitive product configurations which meet customers requirements for various workloads using different and changing specifications. Each recommended product must only use currently available parts and account for changes in standard and optional components. The method is designed to configure products to be manufactured on a worldwide basis. Much of the customer's requirement input can automatically be filled in from secondary data sources eliminating keying errors and identifying invalid configurations. Additional design features of the method include a unique structure that allows both the data and the database design, vs. just the data, to be used by programs so that as new components are added, programs do not need to be updated to reflect the changes to the structure of the database design.
