Abstract
A slip defect management apparatus and method efficiently avoids processing of bad data read from a DVD and provides very rapid slipping of defective sectors in a write operation.
Claims10
A method comprising:
- identifying a physical sector on an optical media,
- comparing a physical sector identifier (ID) with a predetermined list of sector IDs,
- determining if there is a match between the physical sector ID and any sector ID on the list,
- suppressing a flow of data if a match is determined.
1 more element
An apparatus comprising:
- an optical pick-up unit that reads information from a plurality of physical sectors on an optical disc;
- a physical sector ID module that identifies physical sectors from the information read from the disc;
- a memory that stores a primary defect list (PDL) comprising IDs of physical sectors on the disc determined to be defective;
- a comparator that compares the physical sector IDs from the physical sector ID module with IDs obtained from the primary defect list (PDL) and asserts a slip signal if the comparator determines that there is a match;
- a buffer memory that suppresses the flow of data in response to the slip signal.

An apparatus comprising:
- means for identifying a physical sector on an optical media,
- means for comparing a physical sector identifier (ID) with a predetermined list of sector IDs,
- means for determining if there is a match between the physical sector ID and any sector ID on the list,
- means for suppressing a flow of data if a match is determined.
