Abstract
A multi-material runner gate system allows effective de-gating of elastomeric materials that would otherwise stretch and/or flex reducing de-gating forces at the gate upon separation of the molds.
Claims12
A method of de-gating a molded part formed by injection of an elastic material in a mold cavity, the elastic material being introduced into the mold cavity through a runner passage, the method comprising the steps of:
- (1) molding a runner support structure within a portion of the runner passage by the injection of a substantially inelastic material;
- (2) molding the part by the injection of elastic material into the mold cavity via the runner passage adjacent to the portion;
- and
- (3) de-gating the part by force exerted on a runner formed in the runner passage, the force applied at least in part through the runner support structure.
1 more element
A mold for injection molding of a molded part by injecting an elastic material in a part cavity, the mold comprising:
- at least two mold sections interfitting to define a first mold cavity having a restricted runner passage and the part cavity;
- at least a third mold portion altering the mold cavity to have an unrestricted runner passage having greater cross section than the restricted runner gate passage;
- whereby a first portion of the unrestricted runner gate passage may be molded with an elastic material and a second portion of the unrestricted runner passage may be molded with a substantially inelastic material serving to assist in the de-gating of the part.
