Method and apparatus for controlling flow of data in a communication system

A receive data processing unit comprising:

• an input for receiving an acknowledgment message for indicating reception of a packet of data at a destination;
• a processing unit for determining statistical mean and variance of delay of a plurality of said acknowledgment message associated with a corresponding plurality of said packets of data, wherein said delay is a time period between transmitting said packet of data and said receiving of said acknowledgment, and for determining a delay period based on said statistical mean and variance of delay;
• a data storage unit for delaying passing of said received acknowledgment message for a period of time substantially equal to said determined delay period.

A receive data processing unit, comprising:

• an input for receiving an encrypted acknowledgment message for indicating reception of a packet of data at a destination, wherein said encrypted acknowledgment message is combined with encrypted data;
• a processing unit for determining statistical mean and variance of delay of a plurality of said acknowledgment message associated with a corresponding plurality of said packets of data, wherein said delay is a time period between transmitting said packet of data and said receiving of said acknowledgment, and for determining a delay period based on said statistical mean and variance of delay;
• a data storage unit for delaying passing of said received encrypted acknowledgment message and said encrypted data for a period of time substantially equal to said determined delay period.

A system for communications of data, comprising:

• a base station for communicating radio link protocol (RLP) packets of data over a physical layer protocol and acknowledgment message for indicating reception of a TCP packet of data at a destination, wherein said TCP packet of data is comprised of one or more said RLP packets of data;
• a processor coupled to said base station for passing received acknowledgment message from one protocol layer to a TCP protocol layer, determining statistical means and variance of delay of a plurality of said acknowledgment message associated with a corresponding plurality of said TCP packets of data, wherein said delay is a time period between transmitting said TCP packet of data and said receiving of said acknowledgment, determining a delay period based on said statistical variance of delay, delaying passing of said received acknowledgment message for a period of time substantially equal to said determined delay period;
• a network communicatively coupled to said base station for routing said acknowledgment message to a source of said TCP packet of data.

A system for communications of data, comprising:

• a base station for communicating radio link protocol (RLP) packets of data over a physical layer protocol and encrypted acknowledgment message for indicating reception of a TCP packet of data at a destination, wherein said TCP packet of data is comprised of one or more said RLP packets of data and said encrypted acknowledgment message is combined with encrypted data;
• a processor coupled to said base station for passing received encrypted acknowledgment message and encrypted data from one protocol layer to a TCP protocol layer, determining statistical means and variance of delay of a plurality of said acknowledgment message associated with a corresponding plurality of said TCP packets of data, wherein said delay is a time period between transmitting said TCP packet of data and said receiving of said acknowledgment, determining a delay period based on said statistical variance of delay, delaying passing of said received encrypted acknowledgment message and said encrypted data for a period of time substantially equal to said determined delay period;
• a network communicatively coupled to said base station for routing said encrypted acknowledgment message and said encrypted data to a source of said TCP packet of data.
