Abstract
A passive shield system for a syringe including a body, shield, spring and ring which provide an interlock of the shield in the retracted position prior to receipt of the syringe for bulk transportation and processing and wherein the user selects the timing of the release of the shield to its extended position following injection, but which assures shielding of the syringe needle following release of the syringe plunger.
Claims32
A method of assembling a shield system on a syringe, said syringe including a tubular barrel, a needle cannula extending from a distal end of said barrel and a stopper in said barrel, said shield system including a generally tubular body having an open proximal end, a generally tubular shield telescopically supported by said body and moveable relative to said body from a retracted position to an extended position, a locking member and a spring biasing said shield toward said extended position, said method comprising:
- assembling said shield system including said body, shield, spring and locking member, with said shield in said retracted position and interlocking said locking member with said body, thereby preventing inadvertent release of said shield from said retracted position to said extended position prior to receipt of said syringe in said shield system;
- and
- inserting said syringe in said shield system through said open proximal end of said body, thereby releasing said locking member from said body and permitting actuation of said shield system and extension of said shield from said retracted position to said extended position enclosing said needle cannula.
A method of shielding a needle cannula of a syringe with a shield system, said syringe including a tubular barrel, a needle cannula extending from a distal end of said barrel and a stopper within said barrel having a plunger rod extending through an open proximal end of said barrel, and said shield system including a body receiving and retaining said syringe, a tubular shield surrounding at least a portion of said syringe barrel releasably retained to said body in a retracted position, wherein said needle cannula is exposed and a spring urging said shield toward an extended position, wherein said needle cannula is enclosed, said method comprising the following steps performed in sequence:
- injecting a fluid through said needle cannula by driving said plunger rod and said stopper through said barrel;
- and
- then releasing said plunger rod, thereby releasing said shield from said body and said spring then driving said shield distally relative to said body to said extended position enclosing said needle cannula.
A shield system for a syringe having a tubular barrel, a needle cannula extending from a distal end of said barrel and a stopper in said tubular barrel, comprising:
- a generally tubular body having an open proximal end configured to receive said syringe;
- a generally tubular shield telescopically supported by said body and extendable relative to said body from a retracted position to an extended position and said shield releasably supported by said body in said retracted position;
- a spring biasing said shield toward said extended position;
- and
- a locking member releasably interlocking said shield system with said shield in said retracted position and preventing inadvertent release of said shield from said retracted position prior to receipt of said syringe in said open end of said body.
A shield system for a syringe, said syringe including a tubular barrel, a needle cannula extending from a distal end of said barrel, a stopper in said barrel, a plunger extending from said stopper through an open proximal end of said barrel and a thumb pad at a proximal end of said plunger, said shield system comprising:
- a generally tubular body having open proximal and distal ends and said open proximal end adapted to receive said syringe;
- a generally tubular shield telescopically supported by said body having a radial portion releasably supported on a radial surface of said body in a retracted position wherein said needle cannula is exposed and said shield extendable to an extended position wherein said needle cannula is enclosed;
- an annular member in said open proximal end of said body moveable axially in said body having a leg portion extending proximally towards said thumb pad;
- and
- a spring biased between said annular member and said shield;
- whereby movement of said plunger drives said thumb pad against said leg portion of said annular member releasing said shield from said retracted position upon release of said thumb pad.
A shield system for a syringe having a barrel, a plunger including a plunger rod extending through an open proximal end of said barrel, a thumb pad at a proximal end of said plunger rod and a needle cannula, said shield system including a body which receives said barrel of said syringe, a generally tubular shield and a locking member having at least one leg extending proximally of said body, whereby movement of said plunger engages said leg of said locking member and actuates said shield system, the improvement comprising a protective wall extending proximally from said body adjacent said leg having an axial leg generally equal to or greater than a proximal length of said leg thereby limiting access to said leg and inadvertent actuation of said shield.
