Abstract
Methods for inhibiting corrosion are disclosed. The methods generally involve contacting a coated metal substrate with a composition comprising one or more of yttrium, titanium and the rare-earth elements. The contacting step can be performed either before or after the coating is cured. Substrates treated according to the present methods are also disclosed.
Claims36
A method for treating a coated metal substrate comprising contacting the substrate with a composition comprising one or more elements selected from yttrium, titanium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium.
A metal substrate having:
- a) a pretreatment composition deposited thereon;
- b) a coating composition deposited on the pretreatment composition;
- and c) a post-dip composition deposited on the coating, wherein the post-dip composition comprises one or more elements selected from yttrium, titanium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium.
A method for inhibiting corrosion on a coated metal substrate, comprising contacting the substrate with a composition comprising one or more metals selected from yttrium, titanium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium.
A method for treating a coated metal substrate having areas where the coating has been removed, comprising contacting the substrate with a composition comprising one or more elements selected from yttrium, titanium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium.
A method for coating a plurality of metal parts, comprising:
- a. placing the metal parts in a porous container;
- b. passing the container through a bath of coating material while rotating or otherwise moving the container to reorient the parts, so that the coating material contacts the metal parts;
- c. depositing the coating material on the metal parts as they pass through the bath, wherein the reorientation action of the parts results in coated metal parts with contact points;
- and
- d. passing the coated metal parts through a second bath comprising one or more elements selected from yttrium, titanium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium.
