Abstract
In an automotive steering wheel-airbag module assembly a gear system is coupled to a steering wheel and to a steering shaft or column for transferring torque applied to the steering wheel directly to the steering shaft or column. An airbag module is positioned within the diameter of the steering wheel, wherein the airbag module remains in a stationary position during rotation of the steering wheel.
Claims13
A steering wheel-airbag module assembly in a vehicle, the assembly comprising:
- a rotatable steering wheel encompassing an accessible space;
- a gear system coupled to the steering wheel and to a steering shaft for transferring torque applied to the steering wheel to the steering shaft;
- a housing enclosing the gear system, positioned within the accessible space and fixed to the vehicle;
- an airbag module fixed to the housing;
- wherein the airbag module remains in a stationary position with respect to the vehicle during rotation of the steering wheel.
