The coupling comprises: a peripheral locking gasket for the pipe, the gasket being elastically deformable from a state in which it has a nominal inside diameter; an outer clamping ring placed on the end of the pipework element and surrounding the peripheral gasket; and means for thrusting the clamping ring axially towards the pipework element. The coupling has spacer means for holding the gasket spaced apart with an inside diameter greater than its nominal diameter before the pipe is put into place, said spacer means being releasable once the pipe is in place.
/ A coupling (10) for connecting a tubular pipework element (12) with a pipe (14) engaged in said pipework element (12), the coupling being of the type comprising:
/ A coupling according to claim 1, characterized in that the gasket (18) has at least one gap (62) in its circumference, and in that the said spacer means include a removable spacer (70) located initially in the gap (62), which spacer (70) includes a handle extension (78) that is accessible from outside the clamping ring (16).
/ A coupling according to claim 2, characterized in that around its circumference the gasket (18) comprises at least two jaws (50A, 50B) that are curved and rigid, together with elastic return means (51) for thrusting the two jaws centripetally.
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that the clamping ring (16) has a notch (92) in its inside surface for passing the handle extension (78) of said spacer (70).
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that, between the locking gasket (18) and the end of the pipework element (12), the coupling includes resilient trust means (40) for thrusting the gasket (18) axially away from the end of the pipework element (12).
/ A coupling according to claim 5, characterized in that the resilient thrust means (40) comprise a washer (42, 44) that is axially expandable, at least in part.
/ A coupling according to claim 6, characterized in that the clamping ring (16) has an inside groove (38) for receiving the outside edge of said washer (42, 44) that is axially expandable, at least in part.
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that the pipework element (12) has an internal peripheral groove (22) and a sealing gasket (24) disposed in the internal peripheral groove (22).
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that the axial thrust means (26, 28) include complementary thread elements (26, 28) formed on the clamping ring (16) and on the pipework element (12).
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that the associated cam surfaces (36, 56A, 56B) formed on the clamping ring (16) and the gasket (18) are frustoconical surfaces.
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that the clamping ring (16) has a radial hole (83) for receiving a pin (82) for locking the clamping ring relative to the tubular pipework element (12), said hole (83) being formed through the clamping ring (16) so that when the clamping ring (16) is placed on the end of the pipework element (12) and is subjected to thrusting from the axial thrust means (26, 28) the hole opens out along a locking abutment (26) for the pin formed at the surface of the pipework element (12).
/ A coupling according to any preceding claim, characterized in that it includes a pin (82) connected to said spacer (70).
/ A method of connecting a tubular pipework element (12) with a pipe (14) engaged in the pipework element (12), using a coupling (10) comprising:
