Abstract
The present invention refers to a method and/or force in a material having a twinned structure. According to the method, a sufficiently high external magnetic field applied to the material reorients a the twin structure thereby producing motion/force. The operation is possible if the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is higher than or comparable to the energy of the reorientation of the twin structure to produce a certain strain.
Claims13
A method for controlling the orientation of the twin structure in a material having a twinned structure, comprising applying to the material a magnetic field which is of the direction and of the magnitude enough for the reorientation of the twin structure of the material, to produce thereby shape changes of the material and motion and/or force.
A method according to claim i, wherein the magnetic field is directed on the material in a changing direction and/or with changing magnitude as a function of time.
Use of the method according to any of the preceding claims to use an actuator wherein the shape change, motion and/or force of the actuator is affected by the present method.
Use of the method according to any of the preceding claims to use actuators in micro- and nanotechnology, in example the actuators made from twinned thin films, wires or particles.
Dependencies are inferred from the claim text.
