Abstract
A tool holder having two distinct phases, a first phase in which the tool is held in an interference fit with sufficient mechanical interaction between two for the tool to be rotated at high speed and perform its intended purpose on a workpiece, and a second phase in which the tool is sufficiently released from the interference fit to be rapidly removed from the holder (as by an automated apparatus).
Claims12
A holder for a cutting or forming tool, comprising at least a layer of shape memory alloy configured to hold the tool while the alloy is in an austenitic phase, and having a martensitic/austenitic transition temperature below a temperature at which the cutting or forming occurs.
Holding a cutting or forming tool by conforming at least a layer of shape memory alloy into intimate contact with the tool in an austenitic phase, the shape memory alloy having a martensitic/austenitic transition temperature below a temperature at which the cutting or forming occurs.
In combination, a cutting or forming tool held by a holder comprising at least a layer of shape memory alloy configured to hold the tool in an austenitic phase, and having a martensitic/austenitic transition temperature below a temperature at which the cutting or forming occurs.
A holder for a cutting or forming tool, comprising at least a layer of shape memory alloy configured to hold the tool while the alloy is in an martensitic phase, and having a martensitic/austenitic transition temperature above a temperature at which the cutting or forming occurs.
Holding a cutting or forming tool by conforming at least a layer of shape memory alloy into intimate contact with the tool in a martensitic phase, the shape memory alloy having a martensitic/austenitic transition temperature above a temperature at which the cutting or forming occurs.
In combination, a cutting or forming tool held by a holder comprising at least a layer of shape memory alloy configured to hold the tool in a martensitic phase, and having a martensitic/austenitic transition temperature above a temperature at which the cutting or forming occurs.
A holder for a cutting or forming tool, comprising at least a layer of a material characterized by a change in strain upon application of an external agent to the material, in which the holder is configured to hold the tool while the material is in a first phase and release the tool when the material is in a second phase, the material having a phase transition point outside ambient conditions of the tool during use.
Holding a cutting or forming tool by conforming at least a layer of a material characterized by a change in strain upon application of an external agent to the material into intimate contact with the tool in a first phase, the material having a phase transition point outside ambient conditions of the tool during use.
In combination, a cutting or forming tool held by a holder comprising at least a layer of a material characterized by a change in strain upon application of an external agent to the material, in which the holder is configured to hold the tool in a first phase and release the tool in a second phase, the material having a a phase transition point outside ambient conditions of the tool during use.
