Abstract
A diagnostic method for identifying individuals at risk for developing Alzheimer's disease is disclosed. The method relies on elevated levels of the ratio of Aβ40/Aβ42 associated with lipoproteins in the cerebrospinal fluid of individuals at risk as compared to this ratio in the overall population.
Claims5
A method to identify a subject at risk for, or destined to develop, Alzheimer's disease (AD) which method comprises
- comparing the ratio of amyloid β peptide-40 (Aβ40) to Aβ42 in a lipoprotein fraction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of said subject with the ratio of Aβ40 to Aβ42 determined as a normal ratio, whereby a higher ratio of Aβ40/Aβ42 in said subject as compared to the normal ratio identifies said subject as at risk for, or destined to develop, Alzheimer's disease.
A method to identify a subject at risk for, or destined to develop, Alzheimer's disease (AD) which method comprises
- (a) determining the ratio of Aβ40 to Aβ42 in a lipoprotein fraction of the CSF of said subject;
- and
- (b) comparing said ratio with the ratio of Aβ40 to Aβ42 determined as a normal ratio,
- whereby a higher ratio of Aβ40/Aβ42 in said subject as compared to the normal ratio identifies said subject as at risk for, or destined to develop, Alzheimer's disease.
A kit for identifying a subject as at risk for, or destined to develop, AD which kit contains, in suitable containers, reagents for determining the level of Aβ40 and Aβ42 in lipoproteins of cerebrospinal fluid along with instructions for conducting this assay.
