Abstract
A hemofiltration system is provided in which ultrafiltrate is purified by reverse osmosis for reinfusion. Non-sterile infusate concentrate is dialyzed into the purified ultrafiltrate and combined with cleared blood which is returned to the patient. In another system, a hemofilter is used to sterilize essentially pure, non-sterile water for dilution of sterile infusate concentrate, then the hemofilter is used to filter blood, the infusate concentrate being combined with cleared blood for return to the patient.

A method comprising:
- passing essentially pure, nonsterile water through an ultrafiltration membrane to form essentially pure, sterile water,
- adding the essentially pure, sterile water to an infusate concentrate to form an infusate solution;
- and
- passing impure blood through the ultrafiltration membrane thereby removing ultrafiltrate waste through the membrane and recovering from the membrane cleansed blood.
A system comprising:
- a semipermeable membrane, one side of which is in fluid communication with an infusate concentrate and is connectable fluidly with a bloodstream of a patient without making or breaking conduit connections.
A method comprising:
- creating an infusion solution suitable for introduction into a patient by allowing a non-sterile infusate additive to diffuse across an semipermeable membrane separating a first, non-sterile chamber of a container, within which the infusate additive is contained, from a second, sterile chamber of the container containing sterile fluid.
An article comprising:
- a container defining an impermeable interior wall, separated into a first chamber and a second chamber by an semipermeable membrane, the first chamber, including a first side of the semipermeable membrane, being non-sterile and a second chamber, including a second-side of the semipermeable membrane, being sterile.
A method comprising:
- dialyzing an infusate additive into a fluid stream across a semipermeable membrane across which net ionic flow into the fluid stream occurs to form an infusate solution suitable for introduction into a bloodstream of a patient;
- and
- introducing the infusate solution into the bloodstream of the patient.
A method comprising:
- passing a fluid stream through a semipermeable membrane unit and, within the semipermeable membrane unit, adding an infusate additive to the fluid stream to form an infusate solution suitable to be introduced into a bloodstream of a patient without removing solutes from the fluid stream.
A system comprising:
- a semipermeable membrane unit including a semipermeable membrane having a first side and a second side, the first side in fluid communication with a conduit connectable to a bloodstream of a patient;
- and
- fluid circuitry associated with the semipermeable membrane unit, constructed and arranged to provide osmotic pressure driving ionic transport across the semipermeable membrane from the non-sterile side to the sterile side.
A method comprising:
- maintaining a concentration gradient across a semipermeable membrane of a semipermeable membrane unit across which diffusion occurs from a first side to a second side by feeding fluid of a first, elevated concentration to the first side from a constant-volume fluid enclosure while removing from the first side to the constant-volume fluid enclosure fluid of a second concentration lower than the first concentration.
A system comprising:
- a semipermeable membrane unit including a semipermeable membrane having a first side and a second side;
- an enclosure having an inlet and an outlet, both fluidly connectable to the first side of the semipermeable membrane unit membrane, and a movable, nonporous barrier within the enclosure sealingly separating the inlet from the outlet.
A system comprising:
