Abstract
A method for detecting a capacity of a battery, such as a traction battery of an electrified vehicle, includes varying a charge current provided to the battery and measuring a terminal voltage of the battery as the charge current is being varied. An estimator, that utilizes voltage feedback based on a model of the battery to provide state and parameter estimations of the battery, is driven with the terminal voltage to estimate a state-of-charge (SOC) of the battery. The capacity of the battery may be detected based in part on the SOC.
Claims7
A system comprising:
- a first controller configured to cause a charger to actively modulate, according to a pre-determined charge current profile constructed to include a sequence of DC charge current variations defined by discrete current setpoints that are configured to provide persistent excitation of a traction battery of an electrified vehicle to enable accurate convergence of an estimator that utilizes voltage feedback based on a model of the traction battery to provide state and parameter estimations of the traction battery, a DC charge current provided by the charger to the traction battery;
- and
- a second controller configured to measure a first terminal voltage of the traction battery as the charge current is being modulated and provided by the charger to the traction battery and to drive the estimator with the first terminal voltage to estimate a first state-of-charge (SOC) of the traction battery, the second controller being further configured to detect a capacity of the traction battery based in part on the first SOC.
