Abstract
A system for adaptively controlling traffic control devices having a traffic signal system, a computing network, a communication system, and a mobile device. The traffic signal system is configured to be in communication with the computing network through the communication system. The mobile device is also configured to be in communication with the computing network through the communication system. Then the computing network adaptively controls the traffic signal system using a location of the mobile device.
Claims29
A method for managing traffic signal priority comprising:
- receiving, at a traffic management system, vehicle data from a mobile device associated with a vehicle;
- determining a Vehicle Score Stack (VSS) for the vehicle based on historical driving behavior accumulated over a plurality of trips, the determining comprising at least one of:
- monitoring historical route selections over a minimum time period,
- tracking temporal consistency of travel patterns, and
- detecting varying vehicle speed,
- monitoring driver attention levels through at least one of:
- detection of usage of a mobile device,
- driver hand position on a steering wheel,
- measuring a following distance consistency, and
- consistency of vehicle control inputs,
- calculating a VSS boost wherein at least one of:
- a higher level of predictability and a lower distraction level results in an increase in VSS boost points,
- a consistent attention pattern results in additional VSS boost points, applying the VSS boost points to the VSS to compute a VSS value, wherein a higher VSS value results in increased traffic signal priority;
- and
- transmitting the traffic signal priority to a traffic signal controller to control operation of at least one traffic signal to provide priority signaling to the vehicle.
A system for managing traffic signal priority comprising:
- a communication interface configured to receive vehicle data from a mobile device associated with a vehicle;
- a processor configured to:
- determine a Vehicle Score Stack (VSS) for the vehicle based on historical driving behavior accumulated over a plurality of trips by at least one of:
- monitoring historical route selections over a minimum time period,
- tracking temporal consistency of travel patterns, and
- detecting varying vehicle speed;
- monitor driver attention levels through at least one of:
- detection of usage of a mobile device,
- driver hand position on a steering wheel,
- measuring a following distance consistency, and
- consistency of vehicle control inputs;
- calculate a VSS boost wherein at least one of:
- a higher level of predictability and a lower distraction level results in an increase in VSS boost points,
- a consistent attention pattern results in additional VSS boost points;
- apply the VSS boost points to the VSS to compute a VSS value, wherein a higher VSS value results in increased traffic signal priority;
- transmit the traffic signal priority to a traffic signal controller;
- and
- the traffic signal controller configured to control operation of at least one traffic signal to provide priority signaling to the vehicle.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations for managing traffic signal priority, the operations comprising:
- receiving vehicle data from a mobile device associated with a vehicle;
- determining a Vehicle Score Stack (VSS) for the vehicle based on historical driving behavior accumulated over a plurality of trips, the determining comprising at least one of:
- monitoring historical route selections over a minimum time period,
- tracking temporal consistency of travel patterns, and
- detecting varying vehicle speed;
- monitoring driver attention levels through at least one of:
- detection of usage of a mobile device,
- driver hand position on a steering wheel,
- measuring a following distance consistency, and
- consistency of vehicle control inputs;
- calculating a VSS boost wherein at least one of:
- a higher level of predictability and a lower distraction level results in an increase in VSS boost points,
- a consistent attention pattern results in additional VSS boost points;
- applying the VSS boost points to the VSS to compute a VSS value, wherein a higher VSS value results in increased traffic signal priority;
- and
- transmitting the traffic signal priority to a traffic signal controller to control operation of at least one traffic signal to provide priority signaling to the vehicle.
