Offloading data storage device processing tasks to a graphics processing unit

A computer-implemented method, comprising:

• determining, by a data storage device, a number of unrecoverable error correction code errors in a host data block, wherein:
• the number of unrecoverable error correction code errors in the host data block exceed an error correction capability of a read channel in the data storage device;
• and
• the host data block includes a set of subblocks including at least one parity subblock;
• storing, by the data storage device and to a host memory buffer of a host system, a first set of task input data comprising the host data block;
• notifying a processor device to initiate a first processing task on the first set of task data in the host memory buffer, wherein:
• the processor device comprises a graphics processing unit;
• and
• the first processing task comprises execution of a data recovery model;
• and
• accessing, by the data storage device and from the host memory buffer, a first set of task output data based on the data recovery model and the host data block.

A data storage device comprising:

• a peripheral interface configured to connect to a host system;
• a storage medium configured to store host data;
• means for triggering, by an operating model in the data storage device, an operating state change responsive to an operating threshold, wherein the operating model is based on a network of node coefficients determined by machine learning;
• means for collecting, by the data storage device, operational data from the data storage device at a first plurality of time points;
• means for storing, to a memory buffer accessible to a processor device, a first set of task input data comprising the operational data;
• means for initiating a first processing task on the first set of task data in the memory buffer by the processor device, wherein:
• the processor device comprises a graphics processing unit;
• and
• the first processing task comprises executing a machine learning model to determine node coefficient values for the network of node coefficients;
• and
• means for accessing, from the memory buffer, a first set of task output data comprising the determined node coefficient values for the network of node coefficients.
