Abstract
A binder composition for immobilizing a toxic-containing material. This composition has excellent strength developing properties at low temperature and is capable of solidifying soil to suppress the elution of toxic materials from the soil.
Claims19
A binder composition for immobilizing a toxic-containing material, comprising:
- a calcium silicate-containing composition having hydration reactivity selected from the group consisting of cement, blast furnace slag fine powder, fly ash, and clinker ash;
- and
- a sulfate salt comprising anhydrous or monohydrate form of FeSO4 or anhydrous CaSO4;
- wherein the quantity of the calcium silicate-containing composition is selected to control the rate at which a mixture of a toxic containing material and the binder composition will cure to form an immobilized sediment at 4° C. within 7 days with a compression strength of at least 100 kPa, as measured by an unconfined compression test, when said binder composition is mixed with said toxic containing material in an amount between 5 wt % to about 20 wt %, thereby immobilizing the toxic-containing material.
