Abstract
The disclosed technology relates generally to reflective displays, and more particularly to reflective displays configured to display images with customized and improved viewing parameters. In one aspect, a reflective display comprises a plurality of light-reflective microfacets configured to display an image by reflecting light incident thereon from a light source, wherein light rays reflected by different ones of the microfacets are directed in non-parallel directions.

A reflective display comprising:
- a light reflective layer arranged on a substrate to form a plurality of light reflective microfacets configured to display an image by reflecting light incident thereon from a projector,
- wherein each of the light reflective microfacets is substantially flat and is connected to a plurality of adjacent ones of the light reflective microfacets through a plurality of side surfaces, wherein the each of the light reflective microfacets shares a common edge with each of the plurality of side surfaces, and
- wherein the side surfaces have lower reflectivity relative to the light reflective microfacets.
A reflective display comprising:
- a light reflective layer arranged on a substrate to form a plurality of light reflective microfacets configured to display an image by reflecting light incident thereon from a projector,
- wherein each of the light reflective microfacets is substantially flat and is connected to a plurality of adjacent ones of the light reflective microfacets through a plurality of side surfaces, wherein the each of the light reflective microfacets shares a common edge with each of the plurality of side surfaces,
- wherein the side surfaces have lower reflectivity relative to the light reflective microfacets, and
- wherein the light reflective microfacets and the side surfaces form protrusions alternating with recesses, wherein top surfaces of the protrusions and bottom surfaces of the recesses form the light reflective microfacets, and wherein sidewalls of the protrusion and the recesses form the side surfaces.
A reflective display comprising:
- a substrate having formed thereon a plurality of light reflective elements configured to display an image by reflecting light incident thereon from a projector,
- wherein each of the light reflective elements comprises a light reflective microfacet and at least two side surfaces, wherein each of the light reflective microfacets shares a common edge with each of the at least two side surfaces, and
- wherein the at least two side surfaces elevate the common edges shared with the light reflective microfacet relative to edges of light reflective microfacets of adjacent light reflective elements abutting the at least two side surfaces.
