Abstract
A vertebral insert may include a first linkage, a second linkage, and a third linkage. The first, second, and third linkages may at least partially defining a cavity. The insert may be movable between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration, and the movement of the first and second linkages with respect to one another may be configured to reciprocally move the insert between the collapsed and expanded configurations.
Claims20
A vertebral insert for implantation between a first vertebral body and a second vertebral body, comprising:
- a first endplate configured to engage the first vertebral body;
- a second endplate configured to engage the second vertebral body;
- a body portion disposed between the first endplate and the second endplate, and including an elongate guide disposed on a lateral side surface of the body portion;
- a translation member configured to be received in a central opening of the body portion;
- and
- an actuation member configured to cooperate with the translation member to move at least one of the first endplate and the second endplate to increase a height of the vertebral insert;
- and
- a lateral spacer adapted to be slidably coupled to the elongate guide to expand a contact surface between the vertebral insert and the vertebral bodies.
A method of installing an expandable vertebral insert, the method comprising:
- inserting the vertebral insert between two vertebral bodies while the vertebral insert is in a collapsed configuration, wherein the vertebral insert includes:
- a first endplate configured to engage a first vertebral body;
- a second endplate configured to engage a second vertebral body;
- a body portion disposed between the first endplate and the second endplate, and including an elongate guide disposed on a lateral side surface of the body portion;
- a lateral spacer adapted to be slidably coupled to the elongate guide to expand a contact surface between the vertebral insert and the vertebral bodies;
- a translation member configured to be received in a central opening of the body portion;
- and
- an actuation member configured to cooperate with the translation member to move at least one of the first endplate and the second endplate to increase a height of the vertebral insert;
- and
- slidably coupling the lateral spacer to the elongate guide of the body portion;
- expanding the vertebral insert to an expanded configuration such that the height of the vertebral insert is increased.
