Abstract
Methods and systems for treating a spinal joint with a facet joint replacement. The prosthesis can include a first component having a first articulating surface and a second component having a second articulating surface. The first component is attached to a superior articulating facet and the second component is attached to an inferior articulating facet. The first articulating surface and the second articulating surface articulate with each other and allow for multiple degrees of movement of the facet joint without fusing the joint.

A method of treating a sacroiliac joint, comprising:
- providing a sacroiliac joint replacement prosthesis, wherein the prosthesis comprises a first component comprising a plurality of ball elements and a first pair of expandable anchoring elements, the first pair of expandable anchoring elements being attached along their lengths to a bone-facing surface of the first component and extending in a plane parallel to a plane of the first component, and a second component comprising a plurality of spherical trough elements and a second pair of expandable anchoring elements, the second pair of expandable anchoring elements being attached along their lengths to a bone-facing surface of the second component and extending in a plane parallel to a plane of the second component, each of the plurality of spherical trough elements configured to articulate with a corresponding one of the plurality of ball elements, each of the plurality of spherical trough elements has a diameter greater than a diameter of the corresponding one of the plurality of ball elements;
- attaching one of the first component or the second component to a sacrum of a patient;
- attaching the other one of the first component or the second component to an ilium of the patient,
- wherein the plurality of ball elements and the plurality of spherical trough elements articulate with each other, and wherein the method does not fuse the sacroiliac joint;
- and
- wherein the first component comprises a first body portion comprising an asymmetrical pair of wings extending at an angle relative to each other and an intermediate portion joining each wing of the asymmetrical pair of wings, each of the intermediate portion and each wing of the pair of wings of the first body portion comprising a respective ball element of the plurality of ball elements, and wherein the second component comprises a second body portion comprising an asymmetrical pair of wings extending at an angle relative to each other.
A joint replacement system for treating a sacroiliac joint, comprising:
- a sacroiliac joint replacement prosthesis, wherein the prosthesis comprises a first component comprising a first body portion having a plurality of ball elements and a first bone facing surface, and a second component comprising a second body portion having a plurality of spherical trough elements and a second bone facing surface, each of the plurality of spherical trough elements configured to articulate with a corresponding one of the plurality of ball elements, each of the plurality of spherical trough elements has a diameter greater than a diameter of the corresponding one of the plurality of ball elements;
- wherein the first body portion comprises an asymmetrical pair of wings extending at an angle relative to each other and an intermediate portion joining each wing of the asymmetrical pair of wings, each of the intermediate portion and each wing of the pair of wings of the first body portion comprising a respective ball element of the plurality of ball elements, and wherein the second body portion comprises an asymmetrical pair of wings extending at an angle relative to each other;
- wherein the first component or the second component is configured to attach to a sacrum of a patient,
- wherein the other one of the first component or the second component is configured to attach to an ilium of the patient,
- wherein first component and the second component articulate with each other, and wherein the system does not fuse the sacroiliac joint.
A joint replacement system for treating a sacroiliac joint, comprising:
- a sacroiliac joint replacement prosthesis, wherein the prosthesis comprises a first component comprising a first body portion having a plurality of ball elements and a first bone facing surface, and a second component comprising a second body portion having a plurality of spherical trough elements and a second bone facing surface, each of the plurality of spherical trough elements configured to articulate with a corresponding one of the plurality of ball elements, each of the plurality of spherical trough elements has a diameter greater than a diameter of the corresponding one of the plurality of ball elements;
- wherein the first body portion comprises an asymmetrical pair of wings extending at an angle relative to each other, and wherein the second body portion comprises an asymmetrical pair of wings extending at an angle relative to each other and an intermediate portion joining each wing of the asymmetrical pair of wings, each of the intermediate portion and each wing of the pair of wings of the second body portion comprising a respective spherical trough element of the plurality of spherical trough elements;
- wherein the first component or the second component is configured to attach to a sacrum of a patient,
- wherein the other one of the first component or the second component is configured to attach to an ilium of the patient,
- wherein first component and the second component articulate with each other, and wherein the system does not fuse the sacroiliac joint.
