Abstract
Described is a method of producing a thermoplastic dispersion or binder from virgin and/or waste plastic and the use of the dispersion or binder to produce a thermoplastic composite product, such as a composite board. A portion of the thermoplastic may be treated using heat and/or a catalyst, or reacted with a coupling agent to produce a functionalised thermoplastic, and/or dispersed in water under agitation to produce a thermoplastic dispersion.
Claims20
A method of producing a thermoplastic dispersion comprising
- applying heat to a thermoplastic to produce a melted thermoplastic,
- subsequently dispersing the melted thermoplastic in water under agitation to produce a thermoplastic dispersion comprising thermoplastic particles,
- wherein the melted thermoplastic is subjected to a treatment step, the treatment step comprising
- heating the thermoplastic at an activation temperature greater than 300° C.
A method of manufacturing a moisture resistant composite product comprising
- obtaining a thermoplastic dispersion produced by
- heating a thermoplastic to produce a melted thermoplastic,
- subsequently dispersing the thermoplastic in water under agitation to produce a thermoplastic dispersion comprising thermoplastic particles, and
- wherein the thermoplastic is subjected to a treatment step;
- combining the thermoplastic dispersion with a cross-linker and a fibre to produce a composite mixture, and
- applying heat and pressure to the composite mixture to form a moisture resistant composite product that exhibits a 24 hour swell of less than about 15% when measured by a 24 hour swell test;
- wherein the treatment step is selected from
- i) heating the thermoplastic at an activation temperature greater than 300° C.,
- ii) adding a metal catalyst, or
- iii) both (i) and (ii).
A composite board comprising:
- a) waste thermoplastic;
- b) lignocellulosic material;
- and
- c) a cross linker,
- wherein the lignocellulosic material comprises at least 75% of the composite board, and
- wherein the composite board exhibits a 24 hour swell of less than about 15% when measured by a 24 hour swell test.
