A method and apparatus for cultivating vegetation in an arid environment includes rooting immature vegetation in a mat combined with a super absorbent polymer (“SAP”) and, in embodiments, fertilizer, sand, and/or soil; providing a sloping area; installing the mat in a lowest portion of the sloping area; and covering the mat with a perforated, transparent or semi-transparent cover. The transparent cover can be placed on or suspended above the mat. Rainwater falling onto the sloping area drains to the mat. The sloping area can be shaped as a bowl or crescent moon. A water barrier can be provided on or below a surface of the sloping area. A water reservoir can be provided below the mat with at least one wick extending from the mat to the water reservoir. Hollow tubes surrounding the wicks can extend downward from the mat to enable excess water to flow into the reservoir.
