Abstract
Systems and methods for providing an integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system are disclosed. The integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system may include: a thermodynamic cycle configured to receive biomass and to output heat and power; and a direct air capture system configured to receive at least some of the heat and the power output from the thermodynamic cycle. Other aspects are described and claimed.
Claims20
A method, comprising:
- gasifying a fuel material formed of carbonaceous biomass in a reactor with oxygen and steam to produce a synthesis gas (syngas);
- combusting the syngas to generate a working fluid for power generation in an integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- expanding the working fluid in a multi-stage turbine system to generate power, wherein a first turbine stage operates at a first pressure and a second turbine stage operates at a second pressure, wherein the first pressure is higher than the second pressure;
- recirculating a carbon dioxide (CO2) stream extracted from exhaust from the second turbine stage through the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- extracting residual thermal energy from the syngas at a first heat exchanger prior to combustion;
- transferring at least some of the extracted residual thermal energy to at least one other component in the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system for performance of a process to promote efficiency of the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- transferring at least some of the extracted residual thermal energy to an integrated direct air capture (DAC) system, wherein the transferring at least some of the extracted residual thermal energy to the DAC system comprises distributing the extracted thermal energy to the integrated DAC system to extract CO2 gas from sorbent materials associated with the DAC system to form a freed CO2-containing stream;
- and
- redirecting at least a portion of the freed CO2-containing stream to the at least one other component in the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system.
An integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system, comprising:
- one or more components configured to:
- gasify a fuel material formed of carbonaceous biomass in a reactor with oxygen and steam to produce a synthesis gas (syngas);
- combust the syngas to generate a working fluid for power generation in the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- expand the working fluid in a multi-stage turbine system to generate power, wherein a first turbine stage operates at a first pressure and a second turbine stage operates at a second pressure, wherein the first pressure is higher than the second pressure;
- recirculate a carbon dioxide (CO2) stream extracted from exhaust from the second turbine stage through the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- extract residual thermal energy from the syngas at a first heat exchanger prior to combustion;
- transfer at least some of the extracted residual thermal energy to at least one other component in the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system for performance of a process to promote efficiency of the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- transfer at least some of the extracted residual thermal energy to an integrated direct air capture (DAC) system, wherein the one or more components configured to transfer at least some of the extracted residual thermal energy to the DAC system are further configured to distribute the extracted thermal energy to the integrated DAC system to extract CO2 gas from sorbent materials associated with the DAC system to form a freed CO2-containing stream;
- and
- redirect at least a portion of the freed CO2-containing stream to the at least one other component in the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system.
A method, comprising:
- gasifying a carbonaceous feedstock in a gasifier to produce a synthesis gas (syngas) stream in an integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system, wherein the power generation system is a recuperated Brayton thermodynamic cycle;
- extracting heat from the syngas stream using a heat exchanger to generate a heated fluid suitable for regenerating sorbent materials in a direct air capture (DAC) system that is a part of the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system, wherein the sorbent materials were preheated by a carbon dioxide (CO2) stream recirculating in the integrated carbon sequestration and power generation system;
- directing the heated fluid to the DAC system to release captured CO2 from sorbent materials of the DAC system to produce a CO2-enriched gas stream;
- condensing and removing moisture from the CO2-enriched gas stream to produce a substantially dry CO2 stream;
- compressing the substantially dry CO2 stream to a predetermined pressure;
- and directing the compressed CO2 stream to one or more destinations.
