Abstract
An exemplary sliding door system, generally includes a frame assembly and a door assembly. The frame assembly is configured for mounting to a wall, and includes a top rail and a guide mechanism. The door assembly is mounted to the frame assembly for sliding movement between a closed linear position and an open linear position, and includes a movable rail and a wing. The movable rail is movably supported by the top rail, and the wing is pivotably mounted to the movable rail. A bottom edge of the wing includes a channel, and the guide mechanism projects into the channel and guides movement of the wing.
Claims19
A system, comprising:
- a frame assembly defining a passageway, the frame assembly comprising a stationary rail, a proximal jamb, and a distal jamb positioned opposite the proximal jamb such that the passageway is defined therebetween;
- and
- a breakaway sliding door assembly movably mounted to the frame assembly for sliding movement between a closed linear position and an open linear position, the breakaway sliding door assembly comprising:
- a proximal edge;
- a distal edge opposite the proximal edge, wherein the distal edge is adjacent the distal jamb when the breakaway sliding door assembly is in the closed linear position;
- a movable rail mounted for linear movement relative to the stationary rail;
- a wing pivotably mounted to the movable rail;
- and
- a latch operable to selectively retain the wing in a closed pivotal position relative to the movable rail, wherein the latch is nearer to the distal edge than to the proximal edge;
- wherein the latch is movable between a blocking position in which the latch retains the wing in the closed pivotal position, and an unblocking position in which the latch does not retain the wing in the closed pivotal position;
- and
- wherein the latch is configured to be moved to the unblocking position by engagement with the distal jamb to thereby permit the wing to move from the closed pivotal position toward an open pivotal position only when the breakaway sliding door assembly is in the closed linear position.
A breakaway sliding door assembly configured for mounting to a frame assembly comprising a horizontal stationary rail and a vertical side jamb positioned at a distal side of a doorway, the breakaway sliding door assembly comprising:
- a movable rail mounted for sliding movement relative to the horizontal stationary rail to thereby permit the breakaway sliding door assembly to slide proximally and distally between an open linear position and a closed linear position, wherein the open position is a proximal position, and wherein the closed linear position is a distal position, the movable rail comprising a first bracket;
- a wing pivotably mounted to the movable rail for swinging movement between a closed pivotal position and an open pivotal position, the wing comprising a second bracket, wherein the first bracket and the second bracket are operable to engage one another to thereby cause the wing to hang from the movable rail;
- and
- a latch operable to selectively retain the wing in the closed pivotal position, wherein the latch is movable between a blocking position in which the latch retains the wing in the closed pivotal position, and an unblocking position in which the latch does not retain the wing in the closed pivotal position, and wherein a portion of the latch projects beyond a distal side of the movable rail for engagement with the vertical side jamb such that the latch is configured to move from the blocking position to the unblocking position as the breakaway sliding door assembly approaches the closed linear position.
A breakaway sliding door system, comprising:
- a frame assembly comprising:
- a stationary rail having a horizontal orientation;
- and
- a side jamb having a vertical orientation;
- a breakaway sliding door assembly mounted for linear sliding movement relative to the frame assembly between a closed linear position in which a closing edge of the breakaway sliding door assembly is adjacent the side jamb and an open linear position in which the closing edge is offset from the side jamb to thereby permit passage through the frame assembly, the breakaway sliding door assembly comprising:
- a movable rail mounted for sliding movement relative to the stationary rail;
- a wing pivotably mounted to the movable rail for movement between a closed pivotal position and an open pivotal position;
- and
- a latch operable to selectively retain the wing in the closed pivotal position, wherein the latch has a blocking position in which the latch retains the wing in the closed pivotal position, and wherein the latch has an unblocking position in which the latch does not retain the wing in the closed pivotal position, wherein the latch is biased toward the blocking position;
- and
- an actuator operable to project through an opening in the closing edge and to drive the latch to the unblocking position as the breakaway sliding door assembly approaches the closed linear position.
