Abstract
There is described a method of controlling a keyboard comprising a backlight and a touch sensor, the method comprising: detecting, using the touch sensor, a gesture performed by a user of the keyboard; and controlling the backlight so as to emit light in dependence on the detected gesture.
Claims20
A method of controlling a keyboard comprising a backlight and a touch sensor, the method comprising:
- detecting, using the touch sensor, a first gesture performed by a user of the keyboard;
- and controlling the backlight so as to emit light in dependence on the first gesture;
- the method further comprising controlling the backlight to emit light in dependence on whether the keyboard is in a touch mode or a typing mode;
- wherein the validity of an operation depends on the mode of the keyboard, such that:
- gestures are valid operations when the keyboard is in the touch mode, but not when the keyboard is in the typing mode;
- and
- keypresses are valid when the keyboard is in the typing mode, but not when the keyboard is in the touch mode;
- wherein the first gesture is a first type of gesture that operates as a touch gesture when the keyboard is in the touch mode and as a mode switching gesture for switching from the typing mode to the touch mode when the keyboard is in the touch mode;
- wherein the method comprises providing a learning period prior to the detecting of the first gesture, wherein the method comprises ignoring gestures of the first type while the keyboard is in the touch mode during the calibration period;
- and
- wherein controlling the backlight comprises controlling the gesture so as to indicate a change in the mode of the keyboard and/or so as to indicate a switched-into mode of the keyboard.

A keyboard comprising:
- a touch sensor arranged to detect a first gesture performed by a user of the keyboard;
- a backlight arranged to emit light, wherein the light emitted by the backlight is dependent on the first gesture;
- the backlight further being arranged to emit light in dependence on whether the keyboard is in a touch mode or a typing mode;
- wherein the validity of an operation depends on the mode of the keyboard, such that:
- gestures are valid operations when the keyboard is in the touch mode, but not when the keyboard is in the typing mode;
- and
- keypresses are valid when the keyboard is in the typing mode, but not when the keyboard is in the touch mode;
- wherein the first gesture is a first type of gesture that operates as a touch gesture when the keyboard is in the touch mode and as a mode switching gesture for switching from the typing mode to the touch mode when the keyboard is in the touch mode;
- wherein the keyboard is arranged to provide a learning period prior to the detecting of the first gesture, wherein the keyboard is arranged to ignore gestures of the first type while the keyboard is in the touch mode during the calibration period;
- and
- wherein the backlight is arranged to indicate a change in the mode of the keyboard and/or to indicate a switched-into mode of the keyboard.
