Systems and methods for drilling

A method for orienting a drill string during drilling, the method comprising:

• receiving, by a computer system, a first orientation of a drill string located in a wellbore from a top drive of a drilling rig, wherein the first orientation of the drill string is a current orientation of the drill string;
• beginning a first drilling operation, wherein the first drilling operation is a first slide drilling operation;
• during the first drilling operation, recording, by the computer system, one or more drilling parameters;
• recording, by the computer system, a second orientation of the drill string in response to completion of a first segment of the drilling operation;
• beginning a second segment of the drilling operation following completion of the first segment, wherein the second segment of the drilling operation is a rotary drilling operation;
• calculating, by the computer system, a starting position of a quill associated with the drill string based on the recorded second orientation of the drill string, the one or more drilling parameters, and well plan information associated with the wellbore, wherein the starting position is for a third segment of the drilling operation, wherein the third segment is a slide drilling operation;
• orienting the quill to the starting position in response to one or more signals from the computer system;
• and
• drilling the third segment of the drilling operation.

A non-transitory, computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

• (a) receive a first orientation of a drill string from a top drive of a drilling rig, wherein the first orientation of the drill string is a current orientation of the drill string;
• (b) send one or more signals to begin a segment of a drilling operation for drilling a wellbore, wherein the drilling operation is a first slide drilling operation;
• (c) record a second orientation of the drill string in response to the completion of the segment of drilling operation;
• (d) during the drilling operation, record one or more drilling parameters;
• (e) calculate a starting position of a quill associated with the drill string based on the recorded second orientation of the drill string, the one or more drilling parameters, and well plan information associated with the wellbore,
• (f) send one or more signals to one or more control systems to orient the quill to the calculated starting position;
• (g) begin a subsequent segment of the drilling operation at the calculated starting position, wherein the subsequent segment of the drilling operation is a rotary drilling operation;
• and
• repeating steps (a)-(f) a plurality of times during drilling of the wellbore.
