Abstract
A controller for an electric booster element in a water heater is described. The electric booster element is powered from mains power and the controller comprises a control module and a capacitive module adapted to store power and supply stored power to the control module. The control module produces a control signal for controlling a relay to supply or restrict mains power supply to said booster element, said control signal depending at least in part on time of use data.
Claims14
A water heating system comprising:
- a water heater configured to be coupled to utility power;
- and
- a control module configured to:
- determine, based on a time of day, that a first tariff period corresponding to a peak tariff period is in effect;
- receive a first request from a demand response enabling device (DRED) to reduce supply of the utility power to a booster element of the water heater;
- determine, after receiving the first request, that a temperature of water in the water heater at a first time is less than a predetermined temperature;
- override the first request based on determining that the temperature of the water in the water heater at the first time is less than the predetermined temperature;
- responsive to the first request, output first instructions that cause the booster element to operate using the utility power;
- determine that a length of time has elapsed since the first instructions were output;
- and
- output second instructions, responsive to determining that the length of time has elapsed, that cause the booster element to cease using the utility power.
A controller for a water heating system, the controller configured to:
- determine, based on a time of the day, that a first tariff period is in effect, the first tariff period corresponding to a peak tariff period;
- receive a request from a demand response enabling device (DRED) to reduce supply of utility power to a booster element;
- determine, after receiving the request, that a temperature of water in the water heating system at a first time is below a threshold temperature;
- determine that an amount of hot water in the water heating system at the first time is below a threshold amount;
- override the request based on the temperature of the water in the water heating system at the first time being below the threshold temperature and the amount of hot water in the water heating system at the first time being below the threshold amount;
- responsive to the request, output first instructions that cause the booster element to operate using the utility power;
- determine that a length of time has elapsed since the first instructions were output;
- and
- output second instructions, responsive to determining that the length of time has elapsed, that cause the booster element to cease using the utility power.
A water heating system comprising:
- a control module configured to:
- determine, based on a time of day, that a first tariff period corresponding to a peak tariff period is in effect;
- receive a request to reduce supply of utility power to a booster element;
- determine, at a first time during the first tariff period and after receiving the request, that a temperature of water in the water heating system is less than a predetermined temperature;
- override the request based on the temperature of the water at the first time being below the predetermined temperature;
- responsive to the request, output first instructions that cause the booster element to operate using the utility power;
- determine, at a second time during the first tariff period, that the temperature of water in the water heating system is equal to or greater than the predetermined temperature;
- determine that a length of time has elapsed since the first instructions were output;
- and
- output second instructions, responsive to determining that the length of time has elapsed, that cause the booster element to cease operation.
