Abstract
Superabrasive elements may be produced by methods including leaching the metallic material from the superabrasive element to produce a leached volume by exposing at least a portion of the superabrasive element to a processing solution, exposing an electrode to the processing solution, and applying a charge to the electrode such that a voltage is generated between the superabrasive element and the electrode and the voltage is applied to the processing solution.
Claims16
A superabrasive element produced by a process comprising:
- providing a superabrasive element comprising a polycrystalline diamond table that comprises a metallic material disposed in interstitial spaces defined within the polycrystalline diamond table, the polycrystalline diamond table comprising:
- a superabrasive face;
- and
- a superabrasive side surface extending around an outer periphery of the superabrasive face;
- wherein at least a portion of the superabrasive element includes a protective covering bonded to the superabrasive element, and wherein the protective covering is bonded to a portion of the superabrasive side surface of the polycrystalline diamond table;
- leaching the metallic material from at least a volume of the polycrystalline diamond table to produce a leached volume in a peripheral region of the polycrystalline diamond table that is leached to a greater depth than a central region of the polycrystalline diamond table by:
- exposing at least a portion of the polycrystalline diamond table to a processing solution;
- exposing an electrode to the processing solution;
- applying a charge to the electrode such that a voltage is generated between the polycrystalline diamond table and the electrode and the voltage is applied to the processing solution;
- leaching a portion of the polycrystalline diamond table;
- preventing leaching of the portion of the superabrasive side surface of the superabrasive element with the protective covering bonded thereto;
- and
- removing the protective covering from the superabrasive element.
A superabrasive element produced by a process comprising:
- providing a superabrasive element comprising a polycrystalline diamond table that comprises a metallic material disposed in interstitial spaces defined within the polycrystalline diamond table, the polycrystalline diamond table comprising:
- a superabrasive face;
- and
- a superabrasive side surface extending around an outer periphery of the superabrasive face;
- wherein at least a portion of the superabrasive element includes a protective covering;
- leaching the metallic material from at least a volume of the polycrystalline diamond table to produce a leached volume in a peripheral region of the polycrystalline diamond table that is leached to a greater depth than a central region of the polycrystalline diamond table by:
- exposing at least a portion of the polycrystalline diamond table to a processing solution;
- exposing an electrode to the processing solution;
- applying a charge to the electrode such that a voltage is generated between the polycrystalline diamond table and the electrode and the voltage is applied to the processing solution;
- leaching at least a portion of the superabrasive face of the polycrystalline diamond table and only a portion of the superabrasive side surface;
- and
- removing the protective covering from the superabrasive element.
A superabrasive element produced by a process comprising:
- providing a superabrasive element comprising a polycrystalline diamond table that comprises a metallic material disposed in interstitial spaces defined within the polycrystalline diamond table, the polycrystalline diamond table comprising:
- a superabrasive face;
- and
- a superabrasive side surface extending around an outer periphery of the superabrasive face;
- wherein at least a portion of the superabrasive element includes a protective covering bonded to a portion of the superabrasive side surface of the polycrystalline diamond table;
- leaching the metallic material from at least a volume of the polycrystalline diamond table to produce a leached volume in a peripheral region of the polycrystalline diamond table that is leached to a greater depth than a central region of the polycrystalline diamond table by:
- exposing at least a portion of the polycrystalline diamond table to a processing solution;
- exposing an electrode to the processing solution;
- applying a charge to the electrode such that a voltage is generated between the polycrystalline diamond table and the electrode and the voltage is applied to the processing solution;
- leaching a portion of the polycrystalline diamond table including another portion of the superabrasive side surface;
- and
- removing the protective covering from the superabrasive element.
