Abstract
A spacing-assured gas discharge tube assembly is installed on a printed circuit board, which may be part of a motor controller. The discharge tube assembly includes a tube body and an electrostatic spacing shield disposed at least partially around the tube body. The shield is configured to prevent close physical proximity of adjacent structures having electrostatic fields that may alter the breakdown voltage of the tube body.

An electrostatic spacing shield for use with a gas discharge tube, the electrostatic shield comprising:
- a first end, a second end, a shield body extending between the first end and the second end, the shield body comprising:
- an outer surface;
- an inner surface defining an inner space therein;
- and
- a varying wall extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, the varying wall having a channel extending between the first end and the second end and defined through the outer surface and the inner surface and in fluid communication with the inner space,
- wherein the channel has a first channel end positioned near the first end and having a first width and the channel has a second channel end positioned near the second end and having a second width which is less than the first width.
An electrostatic spacing shield for use with a gas discharge tube, the electrostatic shield comprising:
- a first end, a second end, a shield body extending between the first end and the second end, the shield body comprising:
- an outer surface;
- an inner surface defining an inner space therein;
- and
- a varying wall extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, the varying wall having a channel extending between the first end and the second end and defined through the outer surface and the inner surface and in fluid communication with the inner space,
- wherein the varying wall comprises a plurality of thicknesses,
- wherein the plurality of thicknesses comprises a first thickness, a second thickness, and a third thickness.
An electrostatic spacing shield for use with a gas discharge tube, the electrostatic shield comprising:
- a first end, a second end, a shield body extending between the first end and the second end, the shield body comprising:
- an outer surface;
- an inner surface defining an inner space therein;
- and
- a varying wall extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, the varying wall having a channel extending between the first end and the second end and defined through the outer surface and the inner surface and in fluid communication with the inner space,
- the electrostatic shield further comprising a lead holder coupled to the second end,
- wherein the second end comprises a cover, wherein the cover comprises a slot extending therein,
- wherein the lead holder is coupled to the cover and positioned below the slot,
- wherein the lead holder comprises a first portion, a second portion and a lead channel positioned between the first portion and the second portion.
A spacing-assured gas discharge tube assembly having a breakdown voltage at risk of alteration by electrostatic fields associated with adjacent structures, the spacing-assured gas discharge tube assembly comprising:
- a first lead;
- a second lead;
- and
- a tube body disposed between the first and second leads, the tube body including a first endcap including a first conductor, and a second endcap spaced axially from the first endcap and including a second conductor, the tube body presenting a gap chamber extending between and interconnecting the first and second endcaps along a tube length defined between the first and second endcaps, the gap chamber containing a gas therein, the gas separating the first conductor and the second conductor and configured to ionize at the breakdown voltage;
- and
- an electrostatic spacing shield formed of an electrically non-conductive material and removably coupled to and around the tube body, electrostatic spacing shield comprising:
- a first end, a second end, a shield body extending between the first end and the second end, the shield body comprising:
- an outer surface;
- an inner surface defining an inner space therein;
- and
- a varying wall extending between the outer surface and the inner surface, the varying wall having a channel extending between the first end and the second end and defined through the outer surface and the inner surface and in fluid communication with the inner space,
- the electrostatic spacing shield being configured to prevent close physical proximity of the adjacent structures to the tube body and the gas in the gap chamber thereof, thereby reducing the risk of alteration of the breakdown voltage.
