Abstract
A medical implant comprising a plurality of biocomposite layers, each layer comprising a polymer and a plurality of uni-directionally aligned continuous reinforcement fibers. The medical implant is suitable for load-bearing orthopedic implant applications and comprises one or more biocomposite materials where sustained mechanical strength and stiffness are critical for proper implant function.
Claims24
A medical implant comprising a biocomposite;
- wherein the biocomposite comprises a polymer and a plurality of continuous reinforcement fibers;
- wherein the fibers are aligned in plurality of fiber bundles;
- wherein said fibers are uni-directionally aligned within each fiber bundle;
- wherein said polymer is biodegradable and said implant is bioabsorbable;
- wherein said continuous fibers are longer than 4 mm;
- and wherein a distance between adjacent reinforcing fibers within the bundle is in the range of 0.5.50 μm.
