System and method for identifying location of content within an electronic document

A system for identifying a location of content within an electronic document, the system comprising:

• a memory unit configured to store a first routine and a second routine;
• a first processor configured to, upon execution of the first routine:
• generate a location identifier for a content item contained in a stream within the electronic document in accordance with a location identification rule, including:
• generate, from a stream descriptor of the stream, a stream identifier of the content item contained in the stream, and
• determine an offset identifier for the content item based on a position of the content item within the stream, wherein the location identifier for the content item is based on the stream identifier and the offset identifier;
• and
• a second processor configured to, upon execution of the second routine:
• assign the location identifier to the content item contained in the stream within the electronic document;
• and wherein the first processor is further configured to locate the content item based on the location identifier.
