Abstract
A foot presence sensor system for an active article of footwear can include a sensor housing configured to be disposed at or in an insole of the article, and a controller circuit, disposed within the sensor housing, configured to trigger one or more automated functions of the footwear based on a foot presence indication. In an example, the sensor system includes a capacitive sensor, and the sensor is configured to sense changes in a foot proximity to the sensor in footwear. A baseline or reference condition for the capacitive sensor can be updated to accommodate different use conditions.
Claims19
An article of footwear comprising:
- a device configured to tighten or loosen the article of footwear;
- a housing provided in a footbed of the article of footwear, wherein the device is disposed inside the housing;
- a touch sensor comprising two or more electrodes that are spaced apart along an outside surface of the housing and configured to receive a user touch input at a side surface of the article of footwear, wherein the user touch input bridges at least two of the electrodes, and wherein the sensor is configured to receive the user touch input at multiple locations along a length of the sensor;
- a measurement circuit configured to measure a capacitance-indicating signal from the two or more electrodes, wherein the capacitance-indicating signal includes information about a location of the user touch input on the sensor;
- and
- a processor circuit configured to receive information about the capacitance-indicating signal and, in response, provide a corresponding control signal to the device to tighten or loosen the article of footwear;
- wherein the processor circuit is configured to determine a rate of change in the capacitance-indicating signal, wherein the rate of change indicates a gesture or movement of the user touch input along the touch sensor, and the processor circuit is configured to control the device based on the rate of change;
- and
- wherein the housing is configured to be received in a cavity of the footbed, and the cavity includes a lateral side opening configured to allow user access to the touch sensor.
A footwear system comprising:
- a lacing engine configured to tighten or loosen an article of footwear in response to a control signal;
- a processor circuit configured to generate the control signal;
- a housing disposed in a footbed of the article of footwear and configured to enclose at least a portion of the lacing engine and the processor circuit;
- and
- a touch sensor including two or more electrodes disposed on a side surface of the housing, the sensor communicatively coupled with the processor circuit and configured to receive a user input at a lateral side surface of the footbed of the article of footwear, wherein the user input electrically couples the two or more electrodes via a user body;
- wherein the processor circuit is configured to generate the control signal based on a rate of change of the user input, wherein the rate of change indicates a gesture or movement of the user input along a surface of the touch sensor.
A footwear system comprising:
- a processor circuit;
- a device configured to tighten or loosen an article of footwear about a body;
- a housing, wherein the device is disposed inside the housing;
- and
- a touch sensor comprising first and second elongate electrodes that are substantially adjacent and spaced apart along a first length of the sensor, wherein:
- the first and second electrodes are coupled to a side surface of the housing and the electrodes are configured to receive a user body input, through a lateral side opening of a footbed of the article of footwear, and the user body input electrically shunts the electrodes via contact between the user body and the electrodes, and
- the sensor is configured to receive the user body input at different locations along the first length of the sensor at different times, and in response, provide respective corresponding sensor signal values indicative of a position of the user body input;
- wherein the processor circuit is configured to determine a gesture or movement of the user body input using information about a rate of change of the sensor signal values.
