Abstract
Techniques for performing traffic outage detection in the Internet are disclosed. In some embodiments, a system, process, and/or computer program product for traffic outage detection in the Internet includes deploying a plurality of agents and a plurality of tests to be executed by the deployed agents; collecting path trace data from the plurality of agents to identify one or more terminal events; and detecting a network outage based on the one or more terminal events.

A method comprising:
- deploying, by a device, a plurality of agents comprising cloud- or enterprise-based agents and a plurality of path trace tests to be executed by the plurality of agents;
- generating, by the device, path trace data based on test results collected from the plurality of agents for the plurality of path trace tests, the path trace data indicative of path traces each of which representing a sequence of routers traversed by packets from a source to a destination;
- identifying, by the device and based on the path trace data, one or more path traces comprising a terminal path which terminates at a terminal node different than the destination of the packets;
- filtering, by the device, the one or more path traces comprising the terminal path to remove noise from a plurality of interfaces associated with the path trace data;
- detecting, by the device and based on the one or more path traces having been filtered, a network outage at a particular interface of the plurality of interfaces by aggregating one or more terminal events in which a path trace of the one or more path traces terminates at the particular interface;
- and
- generating, by the device, a graphical visualization of the network outage indicative of each geographic location affected by the network outage.
An apparatus comprising:
- one or more network interfaces;
- a processor coupled to the one or more network interfaces and configured to execute one or more processes;
- and
- a memory configured to store a process that is executable by the processor, the process when executed configured to:
- deploy a plurality of agents comprising cloud- or enterprise-based agents and a plurality of path trace tests to be executed by the plurality of agents;
- generate path trace data based on test results collected from the plurality of agents for the plurality of path trace tests, the path trace data indicative of path traces each of which representing a sequence of routers traversed by packets from a source to a destination;
- identify, based on the path trace data, one or more path traces comprising a terminal path which terminates at a terminal node different than the destination of the packets;
- filter the one or more path traces comprising the terminal path to remove noise from a plurality of interfaces associated with the path trace data;
- detect, based on the one or more path traces having been filtered, a network outage at a particular interface of the plurality of interfaces by aggregating one or more terminal events in which a path trace of the one or more path traces terminates at the particular interface;
- and
- generate a graphical visualization of the network outage indicative of each geographic location affected by the network outage.
A tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium storing program instructions that cause a device to execute a process comprising:
- deploying, by the device, a plurality of agents comprising cloud- or enterprise-based agents and a plurality of path trace tests to be executed by the plurality of agents;
- generating, by the device, path trace data based on test results collected from the plurality of agents for the plurality of path trace tests, the path trace data indicative of path traces each of which representing a sequence of routers traversed by packets from a source to a destination;
- identifying, by the device and based on the path trace data, one or more path traces comprising a terminal path which terminates at a terminal node different than the destination of the packets;
- filtering, by the device, the one or more path traces comprising the terminal path to remove noise from a plurality of interfaces associated with the path trace data;
- detecting, by the device and based on the one or more path traces having been filtered, a network outage at a particular interface of the plurality of interfaces by aggregating one or more terminal events in which a path trace of the one or more path traces terminates at the particular interface;
- and
- generating, by the device, a graphical visualization of the network outage indicative of each geographic location affected by the network outage.
