Abstract
A method, apparatus, and system that provides a holographic layer as a micro-lens array and/or a color filter array in an imager. The method of writing the holographic layer results in overlapping areas in the hologram for corresponding adjacent pixels in the imager which increases collection of light at the pixels, thereby increasing quantum efficiency.

An apparatus, comprising:
- an array of pixels and an optical holographic layer configured to direct light to the array of pixels, the optical holographic layer comprising a first hologram and a second hologram different from the first hologram, wherein the optical holographic layer further comprises a plurality of elliptical areas, and wherein the first hologram is configured to filter the light and the second hologram is configured to focus the light onto one or more pixels of the array of pixels.
An imaging device, comprising:
- a substrate comprising a plurality of pixels;
- and
- an optical holographic layer comprising a plurality of holograms configured to direct light to the plurality of pixels, wherein the optical holographic layer further comprises a plurality of elliptical areas corresponding to the plurality of pixels, and wherein the plurality of holograms includes a first set of holograms configured for color filtering the light and a second set of holograms configured for focusing the light onto respective pixels of the plurality of pixels.
A method of capturing an image, comprising:
- receiving incident light at an optical holographic layer comprising a first set of holograms and a second set of holograms different from the first set of holograms;
- filtering the incident light using the first set of holograms, wherein the incident light is filtered by respective holograms of the first set of holograms to obtain a color component from a set of color components in accordance with a color associated with a corresponding pixel of a pixel array;
- and
- focusing the filtered incident light onto respective pixels of the pixel array using the second set of holograms, wherein the filtered incident light is focused based at least in part on two or more elliptical areas of the optical holographic layer, and wherein the image is captured based at least in part on the filtered incident light being focused onto the respective pixels.
