Abstract
A braking system is disclosed. In various embodiments, the brake system includes a brake assembly; a hydraulic braking subsystem having a hydraulic brake actuator configured to operate the brake assembly; and an electric braking subsystem having an electric brake actuator configured to operate the brake assembly.
Claims9
A braking system, comprising:
- a brake assembly including a pressure plate;
- a hydraulic braking subsystem having a plurality of hydraulic brake actuators disposed adjacent to the pressure plate and configured to operate the brake assembly;
- an electric braking subsystem separate from the hydraulic braking subsystem, the electric braking subsystem having a plurality of electric brake actuators interspersed between the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators, each of the plurality of electric brake actuators being spaced about the pressure plate at an interval from each of the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators;
- a hydraulic brake control unit configured to control operation of the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators;
- an electric brake control unit configured to control operation of the plurality of electric brake actuators;
- and
- at least one of:
- the hydraulic brake control unit is configured to transfer operation of the braking system to the electric brake control unit following a failure occurring within the hydraulic braking subsystem so as to activate the plurality of electric brake actuators for applying a braking force to the brake assembly, and the plurality of electric brake actuators are different from the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators;
- and
- the electric brake control unit is configured to transfer operation of the braking system to the hydraulic brake control unit following a failure occurring within the electric braking subsystem so as to activate the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators for applying a braking force to the brake assembly, and the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators are different from the plurality of electric brake actuators.

A redundant braking system for an aircraft, comprising:
- a brake assembly having a pressure plate, an end plate, a plurality of rotor disks, and a plurality of stator disks interleaved with the plurality of rotor disks, the plurality of rotor disks and the plurality of stator disks disposed between the pressure plate and the end plate;
- a hydraulic braking subsystem having a plurality of hydraulic brake actuators configured to contact the pressure plate to compress the plurality of rotor disks against the plurality of stator disks by urging the pressure plate toward the end plate, and a hydraulic brake control unit configured to control operation of the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators;
- an electric braking subsystem separate from the hydraulic braking subsystem, the electric braking subsystem having a plurality of electric brake actuators interspersed between the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators and configured to contact the pressure plate to compress the plurality of rotor disks against the plurality of stator disks by urging the pressure plate toward the end plate, each of the plurality of electric brake actuators being spaced about the pressure plate at an interval from each of the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators, and an electric brake control unit configured to control operation of the plurality of electric brake actuators;
- and
- at least one of:
- the hydraulic brake control unit is configured to transfer operation of the braking system to the electric brake control unit following a failure occurring within the hydraulic braking subsystem so as to activate the plurality of electric brake actuators for applying a braking force to the brake assembly, and the plurality of electric brake actuators are different from the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators;
- and
- the electric brake control unit is configured to transfer operation of the braking system to the hydraulic brake control unit following a failure occurring within the electric braking subsystem so as to activate the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators for applying a braking force to the brake assembly, and the plurality of hydraulic brake actuators are different from the plurality of electric brake actuators.
