Abstract
A small form factor pluggable (“SP”) transceiver for use in a communications network includes a transmitter adapted to be coupled to the network for supplying signals to the network, a receiver adapted to be coupled to the network for receiving signals from the network, and a programmable signal processing module coupled to the transmitter and the receiver and adapted to be programmed from a remote station coupled to the network. The module can be programmed to perform at least one service or management function on the network.
Claims20
A system for providing at least one service assurance function or at least one service management function on a network, the system comprising:
- a programmable processor coupled to a small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver configured to be coupled to said network at a network node, the programmable processor providing said at least one service assurance function or said at least one service management function;
- a remote node configured for discovering the programmable processor, and configured for remotely re-programming said programmable processor,
- wherein said programmable processor is configured to detect a predetermined message from the remote node, and to respond to the predetermined message to indicate that the programmable processor is coupled to the network;
- and
- a memory coupled to the programmable processor, the memory storing a plurality of sets of service assurance or service management functions, wherein each set consumes a different amount of power,
- wherein the remote node remotely re-programs the programmable processor by instructing the programmable processor to execute one of the plurality of sets of service assurance or service management functions to comply with a power limitation requirement.
A method for providing at least one service assurance function or at least one service management function on a network, the method comprising:
- discovering a programmable processor coupled with a small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver configured to be coupled to said network at a network node by detecting a predetermined message from a remote node;
- and
- remotely re-programming the programmable processor to perform said at least one service assurance function or said at least one service management function, wherein said remotely re-programming comprises instructing the programmable processor to execute one of a plurality of sets of service assurance or service management functions, each set consuming a different amount of power, to comply with a power limitation requirement.
