Biomass-based method and composition

A method of forming a composition suitable for use as an electrode material, the method comprising the steps of:

• providing a biomass material, wherein the biomass material comprises a hemp material;
• forming a biochar material from the biomass material using a first pyrolysis process, wherein the first pyrolysis process comprises heating the biomass material to a temperature between 500° C. and 800° C.;
• mixing the biochar material with an activation compound to form a mixture, wherein the activation compound comprises an inorganic compound, and wherein the mixture comprises the activation compound in an amount between 40 weight percent (wt. %) and 70 wt. % based on a total weight of the mixture;
• and
• forming the composition from the mixture using a second pyrolysis process, wherein the second pyrolysis process comprises heating the mixture to a temperature between 500° C. and 1,000° C.
