Bicycle gearbox having segmented sprockets

A gearbox for a vehicle, the gearbox comprising:

• a shaft configured to rotate about a shaft axis;
• a gear cluster fastened to the shaft, the gear cluster comprising a plurality of coaxial gears including a first gear and a second gear, wherein the first gear is physically divided into a plurality of first gear segments;
• a continuous chain engaging the gear cluster, such that the chain defines a plane, wherein the first gear segments are each movable into and out of the plane;
• and
• a shifting system including an actuator configured to selectively urge each respective first gear segment into and out of the plane independently of the other first gear segments.

A drivetrain for a gearbox, the drivetrain comprising:

• a shaft configured to rotate about a shaft axis;
• a gear cluster coupled to the shaft, the gear cluster comprising a plurality of coaxial gears including a first gear and a second gear, wherein the first gear is physically divided into a plurality of first gear segments;
• a continuous power transmission element engaging the gear cluster, such that the power transmission element defines a plane, wherein the first gear segments are each movable into and out of the plane;
• and
• a shifting system including an actuator configured to selectively urge each respective first gear segment into and out of the plane independently of the other first gear segments.
