Abstract
An ice blade measuring system comprises a holder for holding an ice blade in a measurement position, and a non-contact measuring device operationally positioned relative to the holder to measure at least a three-dimensional (3D) shape of an ice contacting surface of the ice blade held in the holder. The non-contact measuring device is configured to create a dataset which corresponds to the measured 3D shape. The system further comprises a data storage means operatively connected to the non-contact measuring device to record the measured dataset.
Claims35
A method of sharpening an ice blade comprising the steps of:
- placing said ice blade in a holder;
- using a non-contact 3D scanner to measure a three-dimensional (3D) shape of an ice contacting surface of said ice blade in said holder;
- comparing said measured 3D shape to a desired sharpened 3D shape for said ice blade to identify differences between said measured 3D shape and said desired sharpened 3D shape;
- sharpening said ice contacting surface of said ice blade in said holder to remove from said measured 3D shape said differences with said desired sharpened 3D shape, and prior to said sharpening step, evaluating said measured 3D shape of said ice blade to determine if said ice blade is too worn for said sharpening step;
- and
- re-using said 3D scanner to re-measure said 3D shape of said ice contacting surface of said ice blade in said holder after said sharpening step to ensure said sharpened ice blade conforms to said desired sharpened 3D shape.
An ice blade grinding system comprising:
- a processor;
- a memory associated with said processor, said memory containing at least one ideal dataset corresponding to a desired three-dimensional (3D) ice blade shape;
- a holder for holding an ice blade in a grinding position;
- a grinding device operationally positioned relative to said holder, and controlled by said processor, to perform a grinding action on said ice blade held in said holder, based on said at least one dataset;
- and
- a non-contact measuring device to measure a 3D shape of said ice blade before said grinding device performs said grinding action, and store a representation of said measured 3D shape in said memory as a measured dataset, said processor further configured to compare said measured dataset to said ideal dataset and determine any differences therebetween and control said grinding device to perform said grinding action based on said differences, said processor is configured to evaluate said measured dataset to determine if said ice blade is too worn for said grinding action, prior to said grinding device performing said grinding action on said ice blade.
An ice blade grinding system comprising:
- a processor;
- a memory associated with said processor, said memory containing at least one ideal dataset corresponding to a desired three-dimensional (3D) ice blade shape;
- a holder for holding an ice blade in a grinding position;
- a grinding device operationally positioned relative to said holder, and controlled by said processor, to perform a grinding action on said ice blade held in said holder, based on said at least one dataset, said grinding device is adapted to move in at least two dimensions relative to said ice blade held in said holder, said griding device includes a grinding head and a carriage assembly attached to said grinding head, said carriage assembly being configured to move said grinding head along said at least two dimensions relative to said ice blade held in said holder, the carriage assembly includes:
- a first support oriented in one of said two dimensions;
- a second support oriented in the other of said two dimensions, said second support mounted to said first support, and configured to move along said first support;
- a carriage mounted to said second support and configured to move along said second support;
- wherein said carriage attaches said grinding head;
- and
- wherein said processor is configured to control said movement of said second support and said carriage;
- and
- a non-contact measuring device to measure a 3D shape of said ice blade before said grinding device performs said grinding action, and store a representation of said measured 3D shape in said memory as a measured dataset, said processor further configured to compare said measured dataset to said ideal dataset and determine any differences therebetween and control said grinding device to perform said grinding action based on said differences.
