Methods are disclosed for hiding a two-dimensional code such as a QR code within a visible layer of randomly scattered line segments. The scattering parameters comprise the length of successive line segments as well as their relative offsets. These parameters are stored in a key. The hidden 2d code is recovered with a computing device such as a smartphone carrying out the acquisition, perspective correction, and rectification of the visible layer of scattered line segments. This computing device synthesizes in its memory according to that same key a hidden layer of scattered line segments. The superposition of the acquired, perspectively corrected and rectified visible layer and of the hidden layer yields an image from which the hidden 2D code is revealed. The presented methods enable the secret transmission of information from the real world of documents and objects to databases located on computer networks.
A method for hiding and recovering a 2D code, said 2D code being hidden within a visible layer of scattered line segments, the method comprising the step of defining a key specifying the distribution of said scattered line segments, where recovering said 2D code comprises the steps of creating within a computing device a hidden layer of line segments scattered according to said key and superposing within the computing device said hidden layer and the visible layer that has been acquired, perspectively corrected, and rectified.
A composite visible layer comprising randomly scattered line segments laid out along two different orientations, whose line segment distribution hides at least one 2D code, said 2D code being recoverable by a computing device, equipped with a camera or a scanner, (a) carrying out an acquisition of said composite visible layer, (b) performing on the acquired composite visible layer a perspective correction, (c) performing on the acquired and perspectively corrected visible layer a rectification, (d) synthesizing a hidden layer of scattered line segments with a same key that was used to synthesize the scattered line segments of the visible layer and (e) superposing the acquired, perspectively corrected and rectified composite visible layer with said synthesized hidden layer of scattered line segments, (f) low-pass filtering and thresholding the superposition, thereby recovering the hidden 2D code.
A computing device operable for authenticating documents or goods by recovering a 2D code hidden into a visible layer of line segments scattered according to a key, said computing device comprising:
