Contextual data visualization

An analytics engine comprising:

• a computer processor and a memory accessible by the computer processor;
• an interface module for receiving a data visualization request from a user, the data visualization request comprising data and meta-data describing a context of the request;
• and
• a database comprising records of previous data visualizations by multiple users, each record comprising:
• templates, descriptions of data visualized, and meta-data associated with the data;
• wherein the processor is programmed to:
• receive data selected by a user and meta-data associated with the data;
• analyze the data to determine content and structure attributes of the data that are relevant to visualization of the data;
• analyze the meta-data to determine a context in which the visualization of the data will be used, wherein the context indicates a role of the user, an intended audience of the visualization of the data, and a role-based task of the user;
• access the database and select, based on a use history of the user, at least one template from the visualization records of the database that matches the data attributes and context;
• and
• create a data visualization by applying the at least one template to the data.

A computer program product for contextual data visualization, the computer program product comprising:

• a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code, when executed by a processor, causing the processor to:
• receive data selected by a user and meta-data associated with the data;
• receive, from the user, an indication of in which application a data visualization will be presented;
• analyze the data to determine content and structure attributes of the data that are relevant to visualization of the data;
• analyze the meta-data to determine a context in which the visualization of the data will be used;
• access a database comprising an aggregation of visualization records from a plurality of users;
• select, based on a use history of the user, at least one template from the visualization records of the database that matches the data attributes and context;
• and
• create the data visualization by applying the at least one template to the data.
