Road milling machine and method for measuring the milling depth

A road milling machine, comprising:

• a machine frame;
• a plurality of ground engaging units;
• a plurality of lifting columns supporting the machine frame from the plurality of ground engaging units;
• a milling roller attached to the machine frame and configured to be lowered to a milling depth to mill a ground surface to create a milling track;
• at least one side plate located to at least one side of the milling roller to engage an untreated ground surface;
• a stripping plate operative to be lowered onto the milling track generated by the milling roller;
• at least one ground engaging sensor;
• and
• a controller configured to:
• (a) measure the milling depth of the milling track at least in part by detecting a measurement value relative to the machine frame of the at least one ground engaging sensor;
• (b) adjust the milling depth of the milling track by adjusting an extension of at least a first one of the lifting columns to adjust a height of the machine frame;
• and
• (c) establish a predetermined longitudinal inclination front to rear of the machine frame by adjusting an extension of at least a second one of the lifting columns.
