Abstract
A microwave ablation system for treating tissue includes an antenna adapted for insertion into tissue, a microwave output stage, and a sensor component. The microwave output stage is adapted to generate microwave energy and is operatively coupled to the antenna to transmit the microwave energy into the tissue. The sensor component is operatively coupled to the antenna and operatively monitors the microwave energy.
Claims20
A microwave ablation system, comprising:
- a microwave antenna;
- a microwave output stage configured to be coupled to the microwave antenna and to generate therapeutic microwave energy and non-therapeutic microwave energy;
- a sensor component operatively coupled to the microwave antenna and configured to sense at least one parameter of the therapeutic microwave energy delivered to the microwave antenna;
- and
- a control component configured to switch the microwave output stage between a transmit mode wherein the microwave output stage delivers the therapeutic microwave energy to the microwave antenna and a receive mode wherein:
- the microwave output stage terminates delivery of the therapeutic microwave energy to the microwave antenna;
- the microwave output stage delivers non-therapeutic microwave energy to the microwave antenna;
- the sensor component receives, from the microwave antenna, the therapeutic microwave energy delivered to the microwave antenna when the microwave output stage is in the transmit mode;
- and
- the control component determines a temperature based on the at least one sensed parameter of the therapeutic microwave energy received by the sensor component.

A microwave generator, comprising:
- a microwave output stage configured to be coupled to a microwave antenna and to switch between a transmit mode wherein the microwave output stage generates microwave energy for delivery to the microwave antenna and a receive mode wherein generation of the microwave energy is terminated;
- a sensor component operably coupled to the microwave output stage and configured, when the microwave output stage is in the receive mode, to sense at least one parameter of the microwave energy generated when the microwave output stage is in the transmit mode;
- and
- a control component configured to switch the microwave output stage between the transmit mode and the receive mode, wherein when the microwave output stage is in the receive mode:
- the microwave output stage terminates generating of the microwave energy;
- the sensor component receives the microwave energy generated when the microwave output stage is in the transmit mode;
- and
- the control component determines a temperature based on the at least one sensed parameter of the microwave energy received by the sensor component.
