Shadow-matched Fresnel lens doublet for reduced optical artifacts

A headset, comprising:

• a display;
• and
• a lens assembly that includes:
• a first lens having (i) a first convex lens surface and (ii) a first concave lens surface that is opposite to the first convex lens surface and includes a first plurality of Fresnel structures;
• and
• a second lens having (iii) a second convex lens surface and (iv) a second concave lens surface opposite to the second convex lens surface, wherein the first concave lens surface faces the second lens and is separated from the second convex lens surface by a distance that varies across the first concave lens surface.

A method, comprising:

• transmitting, with a lens assembly, light from a display toward an image plane, wherein the lens assembly includes:
• a first lens having (i) a first convex lens surface and (ii) a first concave lens surface that is opposite to the first convex lens surface and includes a first plurality of Fresnel structures;
• and
• a second lens having (iii) a second convex lens surface and (iv) a second concave lens surface opposite to the second convex lens surface, wherein the first concave lens surface faces the second lens and is separated from the second convex lens surface by a distance that varies across the first concave lens surface.
