The invention is directed to a method for diagnosing and treating a pulmonary lung disease by detecting a mutant S100A3 protein associated with pulmonary lung disease and by treating a subject with a functional S100A3 protein.

A method for treating pulmonary fibrosis in a subject carrying missense variant rs13835706 comprising detecting a mutant S100A3 polynucleotide comprising SEQ ID NO:
- 3 in a biological sample from the subject and administering a therapeutic agent treating the subject for pulmonary fibrosis.
