Abstract
The present invention provides an improved system and method for using cryptography to secure computer-implemented choice mechanisms. In several preferred embodiments, a process is provided for securing participants' submissions while simultaneously providing the capability of validating their submissions. This is referred to as a random permutation. In several other preferred embodiments, a process is provided for securing participants' advance instructions while simultaneously providing the capability of validating their advance instructions. This is referred to as a secure advance instruction. Applications include voting mechanisms, school choice mechanisms, and auction mechanisms.

A computer system for securing submissions in a choice mechanism with at least two participants while simultaneously validating the submissions, said system comprising at least three computers, said choice mechanism using submissions that express choices selected from a plurality of possible choices, comprising:
- first receiving means of a first computer of said computer system for receiving a first submission from a first participant of said participants, wherein said first submission expresses one or more choices selected from a plurality of first possible choices;
- second receiving means of a second computer of said computer system for receiving a second submission from a second participant of said participants, said second participant distinct from said first participant, wherein said second submission expresses one or more choices selected from a plurality of second possible choices;
- first encrypting means of said first computer for transforming the choices expressed within said first submission into a first encrypted submission using a first encryption key;
- second encrypting means of said second computer for transforming the choices expressed within said second submission into a second encrypted submission using a second encryption key, said second encryption key distinct from said first encryption key;
- third receiving means of a third computer of said computer system for receiving said first encrypted submission from said first computer and for receiving said second encrypted submission from said second computer, said third computer located remotely from each of said first computer and said second computer and interconnected with said first and second computers by a computer network;
- and
- validating means of said third computer for validating said first encrypted submission in relation to one or more constraints on the choices expressed within said first submission and for validating said second encrypted submission in relation to one or more constraints on the choices expressed within said second submission, wherein said validating occurs while said first submission is encrypted and without access to said first encryption key and while said second submission is encrypted and without access to said second encryption key.
A computer system for securing submissions in a choice mechanism with at least two participants while simultaneously validating the submissions, said computer system comprising at least one computer, said choice mechanism using submissions that express choices selected from a plurality of possible choices, comprising:
- receiving means of a first computer of said computer system for receiving a submission from each of at least two participants, wherein each said submission expresses choices selected from a plurality of possible choices and wherein the choices expressed within each said submission are encrypted;
- and
- validating means of said first computer for validating each said submission in relation to one or more constraints on the choices expressed within said submission, wherein said validating occurs while said choices are encrypted and without access to any associated encryption key.
A method for securing submissions in a choice mechanism with at least two participants while simultaneously validating the submissions, said method implemented on a computer system comprising at least three computers, said choice mechanism using submissions that express choices selected from a plurality of possible choices, said method comprising:
- receiving a first submission from a first participant of said participants on a first computer of said computer system, wherein said first submission expresses one or more choices selected from a plurality of first possible choices;
- receiving a second submission from a second participant of said participants on a second computer of said computer system, said second participant distinct from said first participant, wherein said second submission expresses one or more choices selected from a plurality of second possible choices;
- transforming the choices expressed within said first submission into a first encrypted submission on said first computer using a first encryption key;
- transforming the choices expressed within said second submission into a second encrypted submission on said second computer using a second encryption key, said second encryption key distinct from said first encryption key;
- receiving said first encrypted submission from said first computer and receiving said second encrypted submission from said second computer on a third computer of said computer system, said third computer located remotely from each of said first computer and said second computer and interconnected with said first and second computers by a computer network;
- validating said first encrypted submission on said third computer in relation to one or more constraints on the choices expressed within said first submission, wherein said validating occurs while said first submission is encrypted and without access to said first encryption key;
- and
- validating said second encrypted submission on said third computer in relation to one or more constraints on the choices expressed within said second submission, wherein said validating occurs while said second submission is encrypted and without access to said second encryption key.
A method for securing submissions in a choice mechanism with at least two participants while simultaneously validating the submissions, said method implemented on a computer system comprising at least one computer, said choice mechanism using submissions that express choices selected from a plurality of possible choices, said method comprising:
- receiving a submission from each of at least two participants on a first computer of said computer system, wherein each said submission expresses choices selected from a plurality of possible choices and wherein the choices expressed within each said submission are encrypted;
- and
- validating each said submission on said first computer in relation to one or more constraints on the choices expressed within said submission, wherein said validating occurs while said choices are encrypted and without access to any associated encryption key.
